The law enforcement agencies of a country are responsible for maintaining peace and providing protection to the masses that are otherwise vulnerable to damage caused by antisocial elements of the society. Our education system teaches and promotes the notion of trusting and helping the law enforcement sector to ensure the creation of an environment that is favorable to every citizen of the society. However, our first-hand experience with the law enforcement sector fails to align with our learned ideas due to the fact that the police does not function according to our expectations.
Various incidents that are reflective of the unethical and brutal nature of police action continue to surface on a regular basis. In most cases, victims are unarmed and unprepared citizens that are offended by trained and armed police officers. The use of unnecessary and excessive force by officers of the police department may take the form of severe beatings, unethical verbal attacks and in some cases unjustified shootings. All these actions are performed in the name of enforcing the law and maintaining peace, although it is now clear that these notions are utilized to hide the heinous nature of crimes that are committed by police.
This paper will discuss the issue of police brutality and highlight the ways in which police acts to hide the true nature of their crimes and corruption. Additionally, this paper will take into account the issues that arise secondary to police brutality and aim to establish solutions that are necessary to prevent civilians from becoming victims of police brutality.
